- Yet One More Reason to Keep Your Credit Clean
- Two of the most sensitive areas in our lives have come together to serve as a money-making operation for some
matchmaking companies. Imagine asking someone to dinner and your reply is, "Well, OK...but I'll need to know your credit score first."
Sound crazy? Don't laugh just yet - it's actually a legitimate new method many are incorporating in their search for love.
True enough, many work very hard to keep their credit clean and their scores high. Most of us make sacrifices along the way just to
be sure the bills are paid in a timely manner. Parents instill these qualities in us from a young age. The last thing many want to deal
with is collection agencies hounding their date as they're having dinner.
But is it fair for this to be on a list of "must haves"? Maybe. When we're searching for that one person to share our lives with, it's not
unrealistic to want some of the nicer material things that come with success. Still, there's that old saying, "Money can't buy love."
There are people who have worked diligently throughout their lives to build a good one that includes nice cars, credit lines and
beautiful homes - only to have one major medical crisis that lands them in bankruptcy. Is it fair for someone like this to be declined
entrance into such a service?
Is this taking it too far? Our value as a person really should have nothing to do with our credit scores or our bank balances. Some say
you can't build love on a financial foundation and it sends the wrong message. Perhaps it does, but if you're one of those who have
maintained an excellent credit history, it's understandable why you'd want to meet someone who has the same respect for money and
a willingness to play by the rules. In the words of Suze Orman on a recent Oprah show, "FICO first, then sex."
Perhaps this sudden trend in such online dating services that's built around pre-selection based on credit histories has to do with the
struggling economy and record job losses in the past eighteen months. Singles have it tough these days and the last thing many of
them are interested in is shouldering, even in a small degree, the knowledge of a new love's financial demons as well.
It's yet to be seen how well this new focused dating will fare, but if the surge in new memberships is any indicator, we're in for some
hilarious stories from our single friends.
